Horses, Kids and Mr. Excitement

And they're off!!! (Music to my ears and death to my wallet) ... That announcement preceded by the sound of a bugle and parade of racehorses made for a fantastic weekend.

Each year the wonderful folks at Tampa Bay Downs host our USF Foundation Board, the USF Alumni Board and (this year) The USF Research Foundation Board to a day of racing and dining in the VIP Suite.

I lost a few pounds (or was that dollars) yesterday but it was well worth it. Thank you Stella!

We also took a few thousand little nieces and nephews to the movies. Well, there were only five ... just seemed like more with car seats, Chicken McNuggets, popcorn and trips to the bathroom.

We saw Rio 2. It's about a family of blue macaws that were just like The Fockers with feathers.

Had a ball and the kids were great.

Brought Sammy a pizza tonight and spent an hour cutting it into little pieces and painfully watching him gum it to death while he asked me 300 questions.

Oh well ... he's 93 and has a headache once in a while. I have headaches every day he has almost 30 years on me.

Don't forget to order HOME MOVIES!

Bet You're Wondering What I've Been Up To

Been busy lately. I'll give you the high level updates:

1. My staff recently gave me a great present: "Bobble Head" Joel. I, of course, loved it because ...

a. I felt like a celebrity.
b. It actually looked like me.
c. Well .... It actually looked like me IF I weighed 100 pounds less and had all my hair. Okay ... so the Bobble head is about 30 years younger than the guy on the right.

2. We had our annual faculty/staff campaign celebration. This year we dressed like our favorite rock musicians.

I chose Little Stevie Van Zandt (The Boss's side man). Who would have guessed that Dean Eric Eisenberg from Arts and Sciences would pick him too?

He really ticked me off  ... he looked better than me, played guitar and sang too. He was very good.

3. Took a golf cart tour of a large piece of property in Pasco County ... the future home of a very cool high school. Of course, being the city boy that I am, I didn't recognize the big dogs that followed us around.

LOL ... I knew these weren't dogs. I just didn't  recognize the horses without their saddles.

Random Photos

1. Newspapers at home.

These are only some of the newspapers we keep for about a year and a half. The rest are in the garage. Debbie likes them here because she doesn't always get to read the paper each day.

Yesterday, she read an article to me about the recent death of Michael Jackson.

2. Weird guy dancing in his underwear.

A couple of weeks ago we went out to dinner with Tom and Dennie. Tom managed to snap this picture of a guy in briefs with a ballerina top as he danced by the window.

Later we found out that he was our waiter who was a little ticked off with the couple who didn't tip him. He chased them for blocks.

3. A picture of me with my old boss Dennis at All Children's Hospital.

This was sent to me a few weeks ago by one of my former staff members who thought I might want it. I'm not sure what the ribbon on my shirt was for. Probably for the biggest mustache in St. Pete. Doesn't matter ... I was skinny then so I decided to publish it any way.

4. Nicest photo bomb.

Deb took this selfie of us at the Rangers/Rays game yesterday. The chick behind us liked the thought that she could be in our family (I guess).

Sammy today

"Dad ... how's it goin?"

"Well, Joel ... I'm going to WalMart on Wednesday ... on the van."

"Sounds like fun. You gonna shop?"

"No. I'm gonna get a pastrami sandwich."

"Hmmm. Are their sandwiches good?"

"Have you had one?"

"No. Not at WalMart."

"They are very good."

"Great. So what else has been happening?"

"I ate a reuben from Arby's."

"That's nice."

"Ever had a reuben from Arby's?"

"Um. No. I haven't."

"Oh you have to get one. They're advertising them every day you know?"

"I didn't know that."

"Don't you watch television?"

"Yes ..."

"I can't believe that you don't know about this."

"No ... I haven't heard about it."

"Do you know what a reuben is?"

"Yes dad."

"Did I tell you that we went to Bob Evans last week?"

Editorial note: By the way, I am writing a new novel with Sammy as the main character. Stay tuned for that one!

Ballad of the Big Prostate

Here’s a little country tune I wrote just yesterday to commemorate a dark day in my history. I don’t have a tune but realized you can use an...
